Monkey island is on my list of favorite things!. There’s not much to it except a really, small beach with crystal clear water, a canopy of trees hanging over and a swing dangling from a tree branch. With that said – It’s PERFECT!!!!!!
Monkey Island is offshore from the folly ruins in Port Antonio. The stretch of water separating the Island from the mainland is very shallow (about ankle deep at low tide) so it is easy to walk across. However, watch your step if you are walking barefoot as the sea bed is dotted with sea urchins .
The island gets its name from the colony of monkeys which Alfred Mitchell’s explorer son-in-law Hiram Bingham bought in to Jamaica. Rather than keeping the monkeys in his mansion (the now ruined folly mansion), Mitchell let them live on the island.
